The first Pontiac GTO was introduced in 1964 and included a huge package of options in an attempt to target the younger buyers in the market. The package included a V8 with a 325HP engine. The result? One of the fastest American production cars at that time. Those who would wanted to have the full-option car, had to pay approximately US$4,500. In 1966 the GTO became a stand-alone model instead of an option on the Tempest model. Moreover, styling improved that year with new bucket seats that had highe rand thinner seat backs.
To stay ahead of the competition, the GTO got some more styling changes in 1967. The tail lights were replaced with eight tail leights (four on each side). Also, it got Rally II wheels. Lastly, the grill was changed including some chrome. It came with three body styles:
-A hardtop, of which 65,176 cars were produced
-A convertible, of which 9,517 cars were produced
-A sports coupe, of which 7,029 were produced
In 1968, Pontiac introduced the second generation GTO.
